The region is known for its mountain scenery, freshwater lakes and river landscapes.
Discover Naran-Kaghan
Naran-Kaghan is a mountain destination in the Lower Himalayan region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.
The Kaghan Valley stretches along the Kunhar River and features green slopes, pine forests, waterfalls, alpine meadows and dramatic mountain scenery. Naran is one of the main visitor bases for exploring the upper valley.
Many travellers come to visit Lake Saif-ul-Malook, photograph the blue waters of Lulusar Lake, experience the elevated landscapes around Babusar Top, or spend time among the quieter mountain villages along the route.
The area is particularly popular during the summer travel season. Conditions can change quickly at higher elevations, so check local road and weather information before setting out for remote lakes or mountain passes.
Why Visit?
Whether you prefer a relaxed family holiday or an outdoor adventure, the valley offers several ways to enjoy the mountains.
Visit Saif-ul-Malook and Lulusar for striking mountain backdrops, cool air and opportunities for landscape photography.
Follow the valley road beside the Kunhar River and enjoy views of forested slopes, villages and towering peaks.
Explore highland meadows and grassy slopes where accessible routes and weather conditions permit.
Escape hot lowland temperatures with a mountain holiday, while packing for cold evenings and sudden weather changes.
Capture rivers, reflections, mountain ridges, changing clouds and the different landscapes along the valley.
Try regional meals, freshly prepared trout where available, hot tea and familiar Pakistani dishes in local restaurants.
Places to Explore
Use these locations to plan your route through the valley. Some destinations require a separate jeep trip, hiking, or confirmation that the relevant road is open.
One of the region's best-known attractions, this high-altitude lake is framed by impressive mountain slopes and the Malika Parbat massif. Access from Naran depends on snow, road conditions and local transport arrangements.
A dramatic high mountain pass at approximately 4,173 metres. The views can be spectacular, but the road is seasonal and may close because of snow, weather or safety restrictions.
A scenic alpine lake near the upper Kaghan Valley road. It is a rewarding stop for photography when the route is open and conditions are suitable.
A highland meadow area known for green slopes and mountain views. Access can involve a rough track and a local four-wheel-drive vehicle, depending on current conditions.
Shogran is a forested hill destination, while Siri Paye is known for its open meadows and mountain scenery. Both are generally planned as a separate excursion around the Kiwai–Shogran area.
This river runs through much of the valley and adds to its scenic character. Enjoy the views from safe, permitted viewpoints and stay well back from fast-flowing water.
A practical base for accommodation, meals, local transport and excursions into the upper valley. During busy holidays, book ahead and allow extra time for traffic.
Explore the settlements and river landscapes along the valley road. These stops can make the journey more enjoyable instead of treating the drive to Naran as a single long trip.
Plan Your Visit
The valley's travel season depends on altitude, snowfall, rainfall and road clearance. Treat seasonal guidance as an estimate, not a guarantee of access.
Green scenery begins to emerge as conditions improve, though some upper routes may still be affected by snow. Confirm the opening status of each planned excursion.
These are popular months for summer holidays. Expect busier roads and possible accommodation pressure, especially on weekends and public holidays.
Early autumn can offer a calmer travel experience. However, high passes and excursion roads still depend on current weather and official access conditions.
Snow and severe weather can restrict access to Naran and the upper valley. Do not plan a high-altitude drive without checking current road conditions and local advice.
Suggested Travel Plan
This sample plan gives you time to explore the valley without trying to visit every attraction in a single day. Adapt it to your starting point, pace and current road access.
Travel from Islamabad or your chosen starting point via Mansehra, Balakot and the Kaghan Valley road. Stop at suitable viewpoints along the way. Arrive in Naran, check in and take an easy walk if time allows.
Check the track's current status before setting out. Arrange suitable local transport if required, allow time for the lake and mountain scenery and return to Naran before conditions deteriorate.
Depending on access, explore Batakundi and the upper valley, stop at Lulusar Lake, or visit Babusar Top if the pass is officially open and conditions are safe. Do not attempt every stop if time is limited.
Begin the return drive early. Allow time for rest stops and viewpoints along the valley route. If Shogran and Siri Paye are priorities, consider adding an extra day rather than squeezing the excursion into your return journey.
Taste the Valley
A trip to Naran-Kaghan is also an opportunity to enjoy local food and the everyday hospitality of mountain communities. Restaurants in busy visitor areas commonly serve Pakistani meals, karahi, barbecue, daal, roti and tea.
Trout may appear on menus in the region, but availability, sourcing and preparation vary by establishment. Ask about prices before ordering and choose food providers with good hygiene practices.
During peak season, popular restaurants can become busy. Carry snacks and water for longer drives and avoid leaving food wrappers or other waste behind at lakes, forests and roadside viewpoints.
Sample Pakistani dishes and ask local restaurants about regional specialities.

A little preparation can make your mountain trip safer and more comfortable.
Confirm whether your intended route is open before departure. Snowfall, rain, landslides and road restrictions can change access without much notice.
During school holidays, weekends and peak summer dates, confirm room availability and total charges directly with your selected accommodation provider.
Temperatures can drop at night and at higher elevations. Pack warm layers, a rain jacket, comfortable shoes and spare clothing.
Keep sufficient Pakistani rupees for local purchases and transport. Do not assume every small business has reliable card payment facilities.
Before hiring a local driver or jeep, agree on the destination, price, waiting time, return arrangements and whether the road is currently passable.
Mobile coverage and internet quality may vary along the route. Download offline maps and share your itinerary with someone before remote excursions.
Avoid unstable slopes and flooded tracks. Keep a safe distance from river edges, follow local instructions and turn back if weather or access becomes unsafe.
Carry reusable water bottles where practical, take your rubbish with you and respect local communities, wildlife and natural habitats.
